Allium Guide

12 onions, garlics and chives — how each one persists, when it goes in, and where it belongs.

Twelve alliums, and the thing that decides where each one can live is how it persists. A perennial that spreads cannot share ground that gets turned every season; an annual that needs seven months of bed space cannot live in a cinder-block hole. Sort them into the three tiers below first, and placement mostly answers itself.

Permanent

Plant once. Bags, pots, or bed corners that are never turned.

Annual production

Real bed footage for 7–8 months, then out cleanly.

Succession

Cinder-block holes and bed edges. Resown continuously, never committing bed interior.

Deferred

Not being grown this season. Kept as reference.

Not edible

Treated nursery stock — keep it out of the edible beds.
